Used Car Market Analysis
What the Canadian used-car market is doing right now — and what it means if you're buying or selling. Updated October 2026.
The national picture: the price surge is over
Canada's used-vehicle price surge is over. Clutch's July 2026 national report put the average used vehicle sold at $33,786 — down 1.0% from June and just 0.3% above a year earlier. A year ago that annual growth figure was 7.9%. On a like-for-like basis (same model, same age), the typical used vehicle actually costs 1.8% less than a year ago, with the easing concentrated in one-to-six-year-old vehicles. Ontario averaged $33,958, down 0.6% month-over-month. CARFAX Canada's mid-year update tells the same story: pricing has held in a narrow $31,000–$31,500 band through 2026 while inventory grew 15.5% in June alone — more selection, steadier prices.
German and premium cars: a buyer's window
Here's where it gets interesting for our customers. CarGurus data for the first half of 2026 showed the steepest price drops concentrated in discontinued and premium models — the Audi A5 Sportback fell 17.0% to an average $31,346, and six in ten of the biggest decliners were premium brands. Discontinued nameplates get cheaper because no new versions enter the used market. Translation: right now is one of the best buying windows in years for a 3-to-6-year-old German car. You get the engineering and the driving experience for thousands less than the same car cost eighteen months ago.
What to watch: SUVs are hot, history matters
Two things to know before you shop. First, SUVs now claim a record 64.2% of Canadian used sales (Clutch, July 2026) — demand is high, so clean examples move fast. Second, CARFAX found about 32% of used inventory carries a reported damage record, and damage history still hits values hard. That makes a pre-purchase inspection the smartest $150 you'll spend. We do them — put the car on our lift and we'll tell you exactly what you're buying before your money is committed.
Thinking of selling? Price to today's market
Selling or trading in? The same data cuts both ways: the market is stable, not falling off a cliff, so well-kept European cars still command strong money — but the days of getting 2022 prices are gone. Price it to today's market and it moves; chase last year's number and it sits. If you're thinking of selling your VW, Audi, BMW or Mercedes, talk to us first — we buy clean European cars and we know what they're actually worth right now.
